Hunter eyes vs hooded eyes

What people mean by "hunter eyes" and "hooded eyes", what in the eye area actually differs, what a photo can and can’t show, and when droopy lids are a reason to see a doctor.
Published Updated

Short answer

"Hunter eyes" is forum slang for deep-set eyes with little visible upper lid, a straight or slightly lifted outer corner and a low, straight brow. "Hooded" eyes have a fold of skin from the brow area that covers some or all of the lid crease. Both are mostly bone, fat and skin you were born with. A photo can show the outline, not the crease reliably. Upper lids that droop more over time or block your vision are a medical matter (dermatochalasis or ptosis), for a doctor.

Side by side

"Hunter" eyes (slang)Hooded eyes
Upper lidLittle of it visiblePartly or fully covered by a fold of skin
BrowLow and fairly straightAny position; the fold sits below it
Outer cornerLevel or slightly higherAny
Mostly down toBrow bone and eye socket depthSkin and fat above the lid; often more with age

What a photo can and can’t show

  • Light from above deepens shadows under the brow and makes any eye look more deep-set; light from the front flattens it.
  • A smile narrows the eyes and lifts the lower lid; a relaxed face is the fair comparison.
  • Lenses magnify or shrink the eyes behind them.
  • The lid crease is a fine line that often disappears in a phone photo, which is why we don’t label it.

How the app handles this

The app doesn’t label eyes "hunter" or "hooded": the mesh has no landmark for the lid crease, so we won’t guess. Eyes is scored on eye spacing (measured) and brow grooming (rated); canthal tilt and eye openness are shown for interest only.

Questions people ask

Can I get hunter eyes?

Not by exercise, mewing or taping. The look comes mostly from brow bone and socket depth. Sleep and brow grooming change how rested and open the eye area looks.

Are hooded eyes a problem?

Usually not; they are common and often run in families. If the lids droop more over time or get in the way of your vision, see a doctor or optometrist.

Does the app tell me if I have hunter eyes?

No. The face mesh has no landmark for the lid crease, so we don’t guess a label.
